COIN FINDS FROM THE EXCAVATION OF THE MEDIEVAL SANTA MARIA DI CAMPOGROSSO MONASTERY IN ALTAVILLA MILICIA, SICILY

Ewa Moździoch

The publication is a comprehensive study of 115 coins discovered during the archaeological  research conducted at the ruins of the church of Santa Maria di Campogrosso in the town of  Altavilla Milicia in Sicily. New varieties of coins hitherto unknown in the scientific literature, thus
significantly changing the state of knowledge of Sicilian minting. Worth emphasising is the author’s inquisitiveness and research diligence of the author, which is expressed in a wide range of source queries concerning the history of Sicilian minting.

From the review by Prof. Jacek Poleski

The most important part of the monograph is a detailed catalogue of the coins accompanied by photographs. In the elaboration can be found comments about individual numismats. The  collected data represent an important addition to our knowledge of the economy of Sicily in the Norman period and beyond. It should be emphasised here that the most important positive of the
publication is that it shows the coins not as separate entities, but as objects discovered in an archaeological context.
